“I really think the range of emotions and perceptions I have had access to as a black person and as a female person are greater than those of people who are neither…. So it seems to me that my world did not shrink because I was a black female writer. It just got bigger.” – Toni Morrison
On February 18, 2013, the legendary author and first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature turned 82. As a writer, I celebrate her and the way she has showered the world with her words and complex characters through a number of different books. When you realize the power of words and the ability to weave them in to something that can move the world, evoke emotion, inspire, uplift, and entertain, it makes you appreciate the gift even more to be able to do just that. While “Fit and Fab for Life” is my first book, it definitely won’t be my last and I hope that if I’m fortunate to live to 82, I can look back at my own legacy of the written word. Again, here’s to you Ms. Morrison and your legacy of the written word that will inspire us for years to come.
